Our Project

Sturgeon Electric Power Lines

We were called in to provide to assist in the construction of 235 miles of 500 kV transmission line from near Ely, NV to the North Las Vegas Substation. The ON Line project is the first phase of the 510-mile Southwest Intertie Project (SWIP). The project will enable the development of numerous renewable energy projects throughout Nevada, enhance overall energy-sharing efficiencies for NV Energy’s power generation resources and connect NV Energy’s two main service areas for the first time.

Our scope of work included the welding of strakes and appurtenances onto the poles. Also included in this scope was preparation work for the contractor to erect and secure the poles in their final vertical position.

Work crews faced many complications on this project. Weather conditions and terrain were more than difficult and created many deterrents to the project schedule. Wind damages to the large V-shaped towers required additional coil welding to reduce resonance damage on structures.

The transmission lines will enhance reliability of service, reduce costs for Nevada customers, and connect new sources of power. Development of renewable energy in remote parts of Nevada will now have a way to be transmitted to customers in need. Clean power, for example solar, wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric, are all enabled by this project.
